Associated Minors

A minor is a set of courses that a student takes in order to enhance their major degree, though it can fulfill many different functions. A minor allows students to pursue elective courses with more purpose, follow a passion that they may not be majoring in, or show focus in their career aspirations. Students can pursue a minor in any college at the University, regardless of the college their major lies in. The following minors are ones that students majoring in Food Systems have taken to compliment their degree. You can apply for any CFANS minor through the online Minor Declaration Form.

AgronomyThis minor provides science-based courses emphasizing crop management in the context of sustainable ecosystems. A minor in agronomy can allow a student to focus more on agronomic crops in order to better develop solutions in this area.

Applied EconomicsParticularly good for students interested in the business side of the food systems or students looking to start their own farm. An applied economics minor can pair well with the Consumers and Markets track, but it is also a good way to round out your degree if you're pursuing another track.

Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management (ESPM)Many changes in the food system require working with legislatures and policy makers while maintaining the environment the system works within. The ESPM minor helps students recognize, evaluate and begin to develop solutions to a wide range of environmental problems.

HorticultureA horticulture minor is an excellent way to incorporate more growing knowledge into your degree, particularly with fruits and vegetables. You can also delve more into important topics such as managing the landscape your food system is in and pollinator health.

NutritionFood Systems students often work with populations that may be lacking in food or nutrition for one reason or another. A minor in nutrition can better allow you to advise those communities and tailor your work to help maintain health and wellness.

Sustainability StudiesWhile the Food Systems major has a strong focus on sustainability and organic practices, pairing it with a minor in sustainability studies can show extra passion for the topic or help prepare you to work in a sustainability-focused setting.

While these are some of the minors that we recommend students consider taking, they are definitely not the only ones available to you. You might get a music minor because you love playing the piano, or you might get a communications minor because you're interested in doing communications at a food shelf.
